The World War II Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, built in 1960, located in the Republic of the Philippines on the former U.S. Army Fort McKinley, is the final resting spot for more than 17,000 American service personnel who gave their lives in the operations of New Guinea and the Philippines. The memorial consists of two hemicycles, with the inscribed names of more than 36,000 service personnel missing in action, and has a roof area of 34,000 square feet. Surrounding the memorial are large Philippine hardwood trees whose leaves constantly clog the roof drains of the difficult to access roof.
When it came to re-roofing the project in the fall of 2004 improvements to the roof drain system was in order. Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing Philippines Inc., the contractor for the project, selected the OlyFlow RAC Deluxe RetroDrain with its oversized, 14” diameter strainer, designed to increase the drain protection by spreading rooftop debris over a large area minimizing damming. According to Boom Boncan of Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing Philippines Inc., “We received many praises from engineers and architects regarding the design of the RAC drain. When we flood tested the roof we released plugged water after 72 hours and the drain was making so much noise because of the air suction and that was music to our ears because the water was draining fast.”
